Winter Games

Name: Winter Bulldog
Number of people: 12+
Age: 13+
Type: Active outdoor game
Equipment: Snowshoes for all participants, pilons to mark boundaries
Description: All players must wear snowshoes. A boundary is formed in the snow marked with pilons at every corner. One volunteer is the bulldog and stands in the centre while the rest form a line on one side of the boundary. The bulldog yells "Winter Bulldog" and all players try to cross the to the other side without being touched. Once touched they too become the bulldog. The game continues until one player is left. He is the next bulldog.
Objective: An active winter tag game that demands co-ordination
Suggestions: If group is too large there can be more than one bulldog to start. Fun to do in deep snow.
Safety: Ensure all snowshoes fit properly, and practice walking in them to get used to them.
Problems: make the playing field relative to the number of players.

Name: Winter obstacle course
Ideal # of people: 8+
Age suitability: 5+
Equipment: Touques, mittens, boots, pants, jackets, balls, garbage bags, bats
Type of game: Winter Game
Description: Make two groups and line them up one behind the other in each group. The first person in each line starts on "GO" and assembles the clothing to look like a person. After completing this part, the person then runs to the bat where he/she turns 4 times with the bat at their forehead. Once finished this, they run over to the ball and throw it towards the target on the fence. They must throw with their opposite hand. After completion of these tasks, the individual moves off to the side and performs a snow angel. After this, they return to their line and the individual next in line goes next. Remember to mix up the clothes and return the balls to make them visual before the next person goes.
Objective: Get everyone in your line to finish the course before the other line beats you.
Leadership suggestions: Change equipment and order in which the tasks may be performed..
Safety measures: Make sure no one goes until the person returns to their line to avoid hitting the person with the ball.
Problem/recommendations: If there isn't enough people to make groups, make smaller groups but alter what they have to do and how they do it. Perhaps, make them do it backwards or throw in other tasks to prolong the course.

Name of Game: Nosing the Snowball
# of Participants: 10 to 15
Age Suitability: 17+ (because of the potential of head injury)
Equipment: Soccer ball, 4 cones, pinies , and a small section of terrain on the snow
Type of Game: Winter game
Description: The group is divided into two teams (5 to 7 participants per team), one team wears the pinies. A relatively small playing area is sectioned off as the field. 2 cones on each side of playing area are used as the goal areas. The participants must play soccer, pretending that the soccer ball is a snowball and must try to score a goal in the opponent's goal area. The participants must only use their noses to push the ball therefore they must travel on hands and knees.
Objective: Fun, challenging, teamwork
Leadership
Suggestions: -Have the group use their hands if the snow terrain is too deep, but make sure the ball is kept on the group (no throwing). -Have a whistle you, tell them that when you blow it twice, they must make snow angels
Safety Measures: If you are playing using noses, the risk of knocking heads if very high.
Problems Areas: A soccer ball could be too hard if it is a younger group so a softer ball is recommended

Name of Game: Ultimate Winter Frisbee Football
# of Participants: Teams of 8-12
Age Suitability: 14+
Equipment: Frisbee, pineys, pylons for end zones.
Type of Game: Winter Carnival; Action/Competitive
Description: - Divide the class into teams of no more than 12/team and have a tournament.
- The goal is to score a touchdown similar to real football but you use a Frisbee instead of a football.
- To score a touchdown you must dive in the air and catch the Frisbee in the end zone (while still in the air).
- If there is an incomplete pass made in an end zone then the other team regains possession of the Frisbee.
- The players are not allowed to take more than 3 or 4 steps (must pass the Frisbee) with the Frisbee or else the other team regains possession of the Frisbee.
- Keep the play moving and the Frisbee passing in order to keep the action constant.
- The leader must enforce the 4 step maximum rule in order to accomplish a fluid game.
Objectives: - To keep the players moving as much as possible in a cold environment to prevent the players from getting chilled. Have fun.
Suggestions: - During the summer months don't have the players diving for a touchdown because the snow is a lot softer than the ground/grass.
Safety Measures: - Ensure that all players are capable of participating in a fast/competitive/high heart rate sport.  Ensure that all players have the chance to rehydrate themselves.
Problems: If it is too windy out it makes this a tough game to play.
